Calgary's Harmony District Celebrates Lunar New Year

Calgary's Harmony district
Calgary started 2017 on a cold note with frigid temperatures. However, the weather had completely shifted for Harmony District Chinese New Year's meeting on January 15. Harmony district practitioners and guests excitedly gathered at the SGI Canada Calgary Culture Centre to pre-celebrate the Year of the Rooster to accumulate virtue and be loved by all. Roosters are symbols of good energy and industriousness being early risers and ready to work every day. This is also our resolution to start 2017 with strong determination and great vitality.
Participants were engaged in a good discussion on possessing four virtues: true self, eternity, happiness and purity, followed by some Chinese riddle games. In the Chinese tradition, every family always thoroughly cleans the house two days before Chinese New Year. In practising Nichiren Buddhism we clean out our negative karma so as to attain Buddhahood in this lifetime.
Finally, our district leaders shared how their whole family harmoniously worked together to overcome their struggles one after another during the past year.
We were all encouraged to summon up the courage of a lion king and never succumb to threats from anyone as stated in the gosho “On Persecutions Befalling the Sage.” Everyone was inspired by the meeting and with great joy and in high spirits our good fortune will accumulate.
