Message of Condolence

April 26, 2018

On behalf of the members of Soka Gakkai International Association of Canada, I offer our most heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the ten individuals who lost their lives and the fourteen individuals who were injured in Monday’s brutal and senseless attack in Toronto. To think of the lives that have been cut short and the pain caused to so many others is unbearable. We send our prayers to the innocent victims and to those who loved them.

There are no words that can give comfort at a time like this. Nor is it possible to explain how the human heart can descend into such an incomprehensible level of anger and hatred toward fellow humans. The only way we can defeat such evil is to defeat anger and hatred within our own hearts—as Shakyamuni Buddha declared, “to kill the will to kill” and to love and care for each other more than ever.

Let us neither be defeated by hopelessness. Instead, as the greatest tribute to those who have suffered, let us resolve more than ever to create a culture of peace, realizing we are all born of the same human family, and resolving that we will never relent in our efforts to transform our world into a place of harmony and mutual respect and friendship.

With prayers for the precious lives that have departed, and with the conviction that they will be reunited with their loved ones in the future,

Tony Meers
General Director
