Preparing for a Brilliant Future

By Jeff Deeprose, Montreal

The Caledon Centre for Culture and Education was the site of a remarkable conference from July 19-22 as the French speaking members gathered under the theme “Nos brillantes réalisations éternelles !” Participants and guests from all over Quebec, as well as Ottawa and Toronto met in high spirits, determined to soak up the spirit of their Caledon experience and take it home in their hearts.

Over the course of the four days, the study presentations were interactive, the one-on-one exchanges full of friendship and the cultural evening filled with laughter. One guest remarked that he couldn’t believe how funny Buddhists are or how much they laugh.

The experiences given during the culture evening were profound and diverse. One young woman spoke of her intense internal battle to take charge of her life, while another revealed her sudden awareness and deep determination to no longer accept “good enough” in her life, but rather to apply her Buddhist practice to achieve all her dreams. A man who has only been practising Buddhism for five weeks spoke of his understanding of how chanting can not only change one person’s life but that of an entire society, and he determined to use his practice to affect tremendous change in his homeland of Haiti.

As the conference closed, the participants gathered by chapter to discuss how to best implement all they had learned and experienced back in their districts. A strong determination to work for kosen-rufu en français was clear in everyone’s eyes. Un excellent départ vers l’avenir!
