Western Canada was so very fortunate to have Helen Izumi-Choi (SGI Canada Women’s Leader) and Mai Ogushi (SGI Canada Young Women’s Leader) visit Vancouver in April.
This was a kick-off toward the upcoming Women’s General Meetings in May. Western Region consists of eight Areas. Despite long distances for some it was wonderful that there was participation from all eight. One woman from Kelowna drove about five hours to attend the meeting. Vancouver Island, Area 8, and had 22 young women and women attend. They had traversed over sea and land with a seeking mind in their hearts.
On Saturday morning, the Cantonese-speaking women and young women had a gathering with Helen and Mai of close to 50 in attendance. The afternoon English-speaking meeting was attended by 287 participants including 14 behind-the-scenes members. The Vancouver Culture Centre was packed.
Our amazing Youth Choir performed the song “Youth with a Noble Vow.” The young women performed a wonderful skit from The New Human Revolution portraying SGI President Ikeda's trip to Canada in volumes 1 and 30.
We were encouraged by a women’s member determination and a couple of inspiring experiences. One member’s experience was based on how encouraged she was from reading The New Human Revolution and how that inspired her own creativity with her life. Another experience was about a member and her family’s long journey of winter (challenges) that transformed into spring (benefits). Mai shared her experience about a breakthrough not only in finding her perfect job but also in faith.
On Sunday, each participant was able to share their determinations including how reading the The New Human Revolution inspired them in their daily life. Both Mai and Helen shared encouragement and their experiences with emphasis on unity— when we create unity, we can accomplish anything.
With all the preparations before, during and after the events as well as lots of behind-the-scenes support from all the divisions, it felt like the benefits we have gained at the national conferences we used to have at Caledon or SGI training in Japan. Most importantly, we were all encouraged to have a victory in our life toward the Women’s General meetings in May. Everyone left refreshed and reignited in spirit.
