Western Region Youthful District General Meetings
By Gary Wu, Vancouver
Throughout the month of November, districts in the Western Region held their annual district general meetings. Knowing the significance of the next two years as SGI Canada works toward the goal of 10,000 practitioners by November 18, 2018, many practitioners made an extra effort to encourage the youth to participate in the meetings. In some districts, youth members and their guests outnumbered the other members. Although this was not an attendance competition, it was delightful to see the outstanding youth turnout.
Golden Ears District
In one of the districts, a couple of international students shared their experiences as they struggled in school and at work, and felt helpless at times. For one of them, it was a heartbreaking moment when she found out that she could not return home in time to say good-bye to her grandmother who had passed away. Amid the struggles and emotional turmoil, she turned to this Buddhist practice, which helped her bring forth the courage to carry on her mission in Canada and overcome her challenges. This experience touched the hearts of everyone.
In the new year—the Year of Developing Youth in the New Era of Worldwide Kosen-rufu—Western Region will continue to encourage the youth to participate in meetings by sharing their experiences and ideas. This will go a long way in helping us reach our goal by November 18, 2018.
