During the month of October SGI Canada held its first official Level I Basics of Nichiren Buddhism Study Department Exam. It was available in English, French and Chinese. A significant event, this effort in study aligned SGI Canada with the SGI study movement around the world and allowed Canadian practitioners to strengthen their faith and deepen their understanding of Nichiren Buddhism.

Practitioners in each district across the country studied and wrote the exam together. The study material provided an informal way to gain the knowledge of the basic principles and true history and purpose of the SGI movement.

In his message to the participants, SGI President Ikeda thanked everyone for their efforts to study Buddhism. He encouraged everyone to embrace the same spirit as Nichiren Daishonin to enable every person to become a Buddha as we work for the happiness of all living beings to brightly illuminate our local communities, society and the world.

In Winnipeg one practitioner commented that the exam helped her understand SGI at a deeper level and that gave her more faith, courage and happiness. She really enjoyed studying with the others in her district and appreciated the opportunity to wake up her determination to improve her life.

Her comments mirror all those who participated and the efforts we made spurs us on to realize how important it is to study this Buddhism and put it into practice.
