Let’s Advance toward November 18 and beyond!

July 16, 2018

This Year of Brilliant Achievement in the New Era of Worldwide Kosen-rufu will reach its climax on November 18, which will be the fifth anniversary of the establishment of the Hall of the Great Vow for Kosen-rufu. We are now advancing together across Canada as never before, with joyful Bodhisattvas of the Earth emerging in every corner of the country.

The 25th Anniversary of SGI President Ikeda’s Third Visit to Canada

This year also marks the 25th anniversary of SGI President Ikeda’s third visit to Canada, when he visited Montreal and Vancouver from September 27 to October 3, 1993. We will commemorate this anniversary at this year’s SGI Canada Day General Meetings on September 30. We will also publish a special section in next month’s issues of NEW CENTURY and ÈRE NOUVELLE.

It was at the general meeting in Vancouver on October 1, 1993 that President Ikeda gave us the five eternal guidelines for SGI Canada that he named “The Vancouver Declaration.” The five guidelines are:

  1. Live with sincerity and diligent striving
  2. Live with latitude and generosity
  3. Live with optimism and good cheer
  4. Get along with others
  5. Live with pride and self-respect

Whenever I read these five points, my heart is lifted with an indescribable joy and sense of gratitude to our mentor. At the same time, I have a profound feeling of pride and determination that we, the members of SGI Canada, friends from around the world living in our beautiful and peace-loving land, will absolutely fulfill our mission to demonstrate that “the kosen-rufu of Canada is proof of kosen-rufu of the world.”

Commemorating November 18 Soka Gakkai Founding Day

In November, to commemorate November 18 Soka Gakkai Founding Day and the fifth anniversary of the Hall of the Great Vow, we will hold district general meetings in every district across the country. On November 4, a special youth general meeting will be held in locations across Canada. The youth division is determined to achieve 3,000 members as part of SGI Canada’s goal of 10,000 members. More information will be published in next month’s issue.

Basics of Nichiren Buddhism Study Exam in February 2019

SGI has produced a new series of study material specifically written for study exams. Titled The Basics of Nichiren Buddhism for the New Era of Worldwide Kosen-rufu, the material will be published as booklets in English, French and Chinese, and will be made available through SGI Canada bookstores and through special orders to enable easy access. This material is a translation of the textbook used by the Soka Gakkai in Japan for the first two level of Study Department exams. The material to be published is the study material for the first level. As additional material is translated it will also be published.

The significance of this material is that it reflects the identity of the Soka Gakkai as a world religion, and recognizes the three founding presidents as the eternal mentors of the Soka Gakkai. The Basics of Nichiren Buddhism for the New Era of Worldwide Kosen-rufu clarifies the essentials of Nichiren Daishonin’s teachings and reflects the accurate history of kosen-rufu. It is therefore of great benefit for all SGI Canada members to take the exam.

The first Basics of Nichiren Buddhism Exam will be held on Sunday, February 3, 2019, and all members and friends are encouraged to participate. This will be the first official study exam that is integrated with SGI’s worldwide study movement. It will be held annually thereafter for new and young members and interested friends.

Through our activities in the remainder of this year and into the coming year, let’s advance together, based on the three pillars of faith, practice and study, and create an ever greater tide of Bodhisattvas of the Earth emerging all across Canada!

Tony Meers, SGI Canada General Director
